How to get your good ideas approved and produced.

There is one audience you might not be considering.

They are closer to the product than anyone else and have the most influence on its success. If you’re the marketing manager – that audience is your boss.

Trying to sell marketing ideas is no easy task.

You’ve done your due diligence. You’ve hired an agency to produce your ideas, and now you need the go ahead from the corner office.

Don’t think it’s any different than trying to sell to your actual target.

You’re face to face and you want the person who signs off on your plan to buy it. Here’s what you should consider:

DO THEY CARE MOST ABOUT NUMBERS?

If that’s the case, include projections based on your metrics so you can back up your success.

IS IT CORPORATE EGO?

Maybe they mostly care about the image of the company and how it positively reflects on them. What boss doesn’t want to look good?

IS IT CONTROL?

Your boss might be the type of person who wants to dot the i’s and cross the t’s themselves. If so, make your presentation open ended and treat it as a conversation and collaboration to get that sweet sign-off.

IS IT SALES?

Your boss wants the numbers to go up, big time. Focus on how your ideas will multiply numbers from previous years. Support your marketing strategy with a clear measurement strategy.

Even if you have to present to multiple stakeholders, if you can pinpoint what matters most to each of them and clearly communicate how it’s accounted for, your ideas will be much more likely to happen.
